AMA has obtained a National Authorization from the FAA allowing AMA members at club sites in Class G airspace to operate above 400 feet above ground level (AGL) for routine, day-to-day activities. At FHRCC’s sites, the new limit is 1200 feet AGL. This is the upper boundary of Class G/lower boundary of Class E airspace at our site locations.
This doesn’t necessarily mean you should run out today and see how high you can go. We are still subject to all other rules and guidelines, such as maintaining visual line of sight and staying out of the way of manned aircraft.
The new limit applies to daytime operations only. Night flying is still limited to 400 ft AGL. Also, the authorization applies to recreational operations under 49 USC 44809 only. If you choose to fly under the 14 CFR Part 107 commercial rules at our field, you’re still subject to the §107.51 limits.
Clubs are required to keep a copy of the authorization on file with the club’s records, and to that end you can find our copy of the certificate of authorization here.
